We all know that dog is a man’s best friend. And they have been for as long as mankind exists. But why this gender discrimination? Dogs are a woman’s best friend too. These furry creatures remain your loyal companion even today. They are more than just pets for us, they are family.
But once in a while, their nasty habits of chewing EVERYTHING just spoil the fun. Now, we’re sure you have lost either a costly pair of shoes (though they kind of like to ruin one of each pair, ensuring you cannot use either) or wallet or rugs or furniture or… blah blah, you get it, pretty much everything. But have you ever wondered why they just love to bite on?
The Reason Why They Tend To Chew Things Up
Believe it or not, it’s one of their ways of exploring the world. They take this chewing thing personally and consider it as an accomplishment. For the young pups, it is a way to manage the pain of their sprouting teeth, while for the adult ones it is more of a regimen to maintain oral health. But, is that all? Absolutely not, they also spend quality time of chewing out of boredom. It also acts like medication from anxiety and frustration.
How To Stop Them From Doing It?
Well you can’t; it’s in their genes. There is no way you can make them stop doing something which is genetically wired into them. So, does that mean, you will have accept it and call it fate? Hell no, what you can do is to redirect their energy and focus away from your things.
Dog and puppy-proof the house
First things first, rearrange you stuffs and put them in proper place so that your furry friend does not just have it anytime, anywhere. Keep in mind to put shoes in the closet, as these are the dog’s favourite chewy thingy.
Find a proper chewy toy
You can easily find these in pet shop; these chewy toys take away your pet’s focus from your precious things and give them something to do and deal with their boredom.
Give it enough time and attention
These little creatures crave for some quality time with their human friends, and you should keep it in mind while adopting a dog. Thus, give them the proper time and teach them what to do and what not.
It’s gym time
You need not to take your dog on a treadmill, but remember to provide ample amount of exercise. This way you are redirecting your dog from destructive chewing. A dog or pup that is tired out of exercise is less likely to go for persistent chewing. Exercise also produces hormone endorphin, which brings calming effect on them.
Use Repellent spray
If redirecting is not working for some reasons or taking more time to work, then you can switch to repellent sprays. These sprays cause unpleasant order and stop them from repeating it in future.
Always bear in mind that being human is being superior and thus being responsible for them. Don’t lose your focus while teaching basic manners to these furry friends. Dog is man’s best friend and now it time for us human to give them the reason why.
